Financially Preparing to Buy a Home

Before the recession, the phrase “house poor” was adopted into the average home buyer’s vocabulary, as buyers hesitated to spend every last penny of their life savings on a down payment for a dream home. To go beyond the “house poor” consideration is to prevent oneself from also becoming “Maintenance poor.”

Marketwatch.com recently published an interesting article for home hunters on how to financially prepare to buy a house in these shaky economic times. To become “Maintenance poor” is to purchase a home unaware of its necessary future repairs with the fatal error of not having enough in the bank to cover these costs.

The article advises house hunters to save at least 1 to 3 percent of a property’s purchase price for major maintenance costs and unexpected expenses. As for mortgage payments, these days buyers should have 6 months of payments saved in the bank because of the wavering job market. For basic repairs like painting and caulking, anyone buying a typical starter home budget $500 to $1,000 a year.

Fall River Public Schools Participate in City Government

The city of Fall River has turned to the individuals that are affected most by school policies — the students themselves. Thirteen students have been selected from B.M.C Durfee and Diman Regional Vocational Technical high schools to participate in this new student involvement program. Seven of the students will be distributed across four different school committees, with six to act as alternates. The students are encouraged to speak at meetings, though they will have no voting power.

To the students, Mayor of Fall River Will Flanagan stated “Ask as many questions as possible and learn as much as you can. Get involved as much as you can.”

The program is reciprocal in that it will allow a group of students to experience everyday municipal government, and it will provide fresh insight to those that regularly participate in the meetings.

The launch of the program has spurred even more interest in student involvement. Because the city boards are currently full, program organizers are seeking other organizations and agencies who would like to invite students to participate. A recent Bishop Connolly High School graduate was recently invited to the Community Development Recreation board.

The Kitchens of Cape Ann Real Estate

Often referred to as the heart of the home, for some families the kitchen is the center of family activity. When the kids come home from school they might have a snack in the kitchen and chat with Mom or Dad about next week’s baseball tournament. As the sky grows darker, Dad or Mom might be found putting something in the oven. It’s important to have a kitchen big enough for your family to comfortably move around in. Modern cabinetry, floor tiling, and counter tops are must-haves for some, while stainless steel appliances are almost always on the wish list.

Here are a few modern kitchens that can be found in Cape Ann real estate.

9 Broadway Avenue, Rockport MA

The kitchen above is part of a 3-bedroom condominium in Rockport, located at 9 Broadway Avenue. An island on the edge defines the kitchen as a separate room and also provides much-needed counter space for food prep and entertaining. Beautiful cabinetry perfectly compliments the hardwood floor, and granite counter tops provide a pretty contrast.

4 Curtis Street, Rockport MA

This kitchen is part of a 2-bedroom home at 4 Curtis Street in Rockport. A flat-top stove matches perfectly with the white cabinets.

75 Dennison Street, Gloucester, MA

Located at 75 Dennison Street in Gloucester, the above kitchen is part of a 3-bedroom home overlooking Goose Cove. Granite countertops and stainless steel appliances will please any foodie in your family. Beautiful cabinet doors compliment the mahogany hardwood floors throughout the home.
